1. Sonar

This electronic music festival takes place in the summer in Barcelona, Spain. It was first held in 1994, and is divided into two parts, Sonar by Day and Sonar by Night. Also part of the festival is Sonar +D, a creativity fair in which artists can show off the newest technological advances in the field. The festival has also held international events in different cities, including Buenos Aires, Cape Town, and Tokyo. It hosts around 80,000 visitors each year.

2. Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland is an electronic dance music festival that takes place in Boom, Belgium in the summer. It was first held in 2005 and has since become one of the most well-known electronic music festivals. Some of the notable artists that have performed include David Guetta, Nervo, Tiesto, and Armin van Buuren. In 2017 it will be held from July 21-30.

3. Montreux

This is a jazz music festival that takes place in Montreux, Switzerland in July. It was started in 1967, and is now the second largest jazz music festival in the world. Although it was exclusively dedicated to jazz in its beginnings, it has expanded to include other music genres. Well-known artists that have participated include Miles Davis, Pink Floyd, Alanis Morrisette, and Jazzmatazz.

4. Fuji Rock Festival

This festival takes place at the end of July in Naeba, Japan at a beautiful location in the mountains. It originated in 1997, and is the largest outdoor music festival in Japan. A now famous performance that many people remember was the Red Hot Chili Peppers during the first edition of the festival. The band played through a storm, despite the broken arm of their lead singer. The lineup for the 2017 festival includes The Amazons, Ran’N’Bone Man and Grapevine.

5. Mawazine

This festival, also known as Rhythms of the World, is the largest music festival taking place in Africa. It is held annually in the city of Rabat, Morocco. It features artists from around the world, and a diversity of music genres. Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Shakira, Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones are just some of the famous artists that have performed in it.

6. Splendour in the Grass

This is an Australian music festival that takes place in Byron, Australia and features electronic, indie rock and hip hop music. It began in 2001, and visitor numbers have expanded to 30,000 in recent years. The lineup of artists in 2016 included The Strokes, The Cure and Flume.

7. Glastonbury

This summer festival takes place in Somerset, UK. It originated in 1970 and is now one of the most well-known music festivals. Artists that have headlined the concert include David Bowie, The Cure, The Who, and Adele. Apart from the concerts, visitors can also enjoy circus acts, theater performances, and much more.

8. Musicabana

Musicabana is a recent music festival held in Habana, Cuba for the first time in 2016. It was very successful in its first edition, attracted more than 450,000 visitors, and featuring different music genres. The lineup in 2016 included Carlinhos Brown, Pablo Milanes, and Ibeyi.

9. Coachella

This well-known music festival takes place in April in Indio, California. It is one of the largest festivals in the world, with a capacity of 198,000 tickets in total for four days. Past performers include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ellie Gouldig, Lorde, Florence and the Machine and Sia.

10. Lollapalooza

This music festival takes place in Chicago during the summer. It features hip hop, heavy metal, alternative and punk rock, and EDM bands. It was created in 1991 and was revived in 2003 after a 5 year hiatus. Nowadays it receives more than 160,000 visitors annually. Some of the famous artists that have performed include Eminem, The Strokes, Calvin Harris and Radiohead.
