Restaurant Guide: Columbus Circle

This gluten-free and vegetarian-friendly restaurant on 8th Avenue specializes in healthy, inexpensive meals. Choose from one of many salads, like the Midtown Chicken (with broccoli, radish, roasted onions and fennel, beans, pomegranate seeds, croutons, and apricot Dijon dressing), Orange Miso Grilled Tofu (with fennel, carrots, peppers, cucumbers, beans, radish and red quinoa, toasted almonds, and orange miso dressing), and North Shore Mahi (with cucumber, mandarin oranges, fennel, apples, red quinoa, raisins, and orange citrus vinaigrette).

Or, try one of ReViVer’s hot meals like the Lemon Chicken or Moroccan Grilled Tofu, both served with tasty sides like roasted zucchini, red quinoa, and baby kale.

ReViVer is located at 934 8th Ave., New York, NY 10019

An intimate wine bar near Hell’s Kitchen, Kilo provides a romantic atmosphere for cozying up with your date. Get a glass (or bottle) of red, white, and everything in between from their extensive wine menu. The grapes on hand come from all over the world, with choices from US vineyards in California, New York, and Oregon as well as international imports from France, Spain, and Portugal.

Allow the lovely waitstaff to help you pair the perfect wine with small plates like Shitake Mushroom Tacos, Baked Brie, Quinoa Risotto, and Hamachi Tartare. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, have a glass of sherry with Kilo’s Tiramisu to round out the evening.

Carnegie John’s

Many New Yorkers consider food trucks to be in a lunch category of their own, and Carnegie John’s has been feeding Columbus Circle for years. You can find them serving all manner of street meat near the 57th Street N/Q/R subway every weekday. Get a Ribeye Steak sandwich, Chicken Pita, Shish Kebab, or Italian Sausage on a hero.

You can swap the bread for a side dish like yellow rice or a salad when you order your meat in a platter. Every dish is under $10, making this one of the most affordable meal options in the area. Carnegie John’s is within a few blocks of Central Park, so you can take your styrofoam container of deliciousness to-go and dine al fresco.

Carnegie John’s is located at 56th St & 7th Ave., New York, NY 10011

The owners of this Italian restaurant in Midtown incorporate the spirit of their hometown of Naples into both their menu and their venue; Pizzarte serves classic Neapolitan cuisine with touches of traditional décor that give diners the sense that they’ve stepped off the streets of Manhattan and into an Italian trattoria. In addition to dishes like Calamari, homemade Pastas, and meat and fish cooked in traditional styles, there are over 20 pizzas on the menu.

Topping options include San Marzano Tomatoes, Prosciutto, Butternut Squash, and Black Truffle, with gluten-free crust available. The restaurant also features a rotating display of contemporary art, so you can find your new favorite pizza and your new favorite painter with one stop.

Pizzarte is located at 69 W 55th St., New York, NY 10019

Tanner Smith’s

Locals list this as one of the best cocktail spots in Midtown, with recipes ranging from classic (“Mayor Gaynor’s Tippler,” a Manhattan; “The Marginal,” a Negroni; “The Winona,” an Old Fashioned) to canny (“Matador” with tequila, cherry & hibiscus liqueur, agave syrup, lime juice, and pink grapefruit soda; “Midnight Moonshine” with mountain-strength poitin, elderflower liqueur, and Lillet Blanc; “Footloose” with vodka, cucumber syrup, elderflower liqueur, celery bitters, lime juice, basil, and black pepper ).

Join the 9-5 crowd while they wind down for the day, and get snacks like Eggplant Chips, Grilled Meatball Lollipops, and Pork Terrine to go with your drink. Stop in for Tipsy Tea during the weekend, which includes a brunch entree, tea or cocktails, and booze-infused dessert.

Tanner Smith’s is located at 204 W 55 St., New York, NY 10019
