Get ready for bed, ladies.
The complexities of a woman’s brain have science saying that women need more sleep than men. (Yes, this would be an appropriate time to start forwarding this article so that you can sleep in this weekend.)
Jim Horne, a Professor at Loughborough University in England says:
“For women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger,” and “These feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.”
8 Hours? Not Necessarily . . .
The usual eight hours per night isn’t right for everybody, as seven hours of sleep is enough for most people to function normally. However, Professor Horne has found that women’s brains are “wired differently from men’s and are more complex, so their sleep need will be slightly greater.”
What makes a woman’s brain more complex?
Compared to men, women do more multi-tasking and use their brains more strenuously. That means that they take more time to recover, which sleep provides better than any other activity.
But What About Tired Men?
Professor Horne also said that men who have jobs that require them to do a lot of decision-making may also require more sleep than the average male, but still not as much as an average woman.
What’s the real takeaway here?
I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely sleeping in this weekend. Thank you science for helping me justify doing the things that I’ve been wanting to do all along.
