The 69th Emmys were incredibly entertaining this year—with a host like Stephen Colbert, what more could you expect?! While this years’ show was fun, that isn’t all. Several winners made history, women ruled, and representation was the star. The following list shows you the top ten most deserving Emmys 2017 winners.
10. Supporting Actor, Comedy: Alec Baldwin
Baldwin won this category for his portrayal on SNL of President Donald Trump. Donning an orange wig and adopting Trump’s hand gestures, Baldwin’s impersonation was uncanny.
9. Supporting Actress, Comedy: Kate McKinnon
McKinnon won this category primarily for her role as Hilary Clinton impersonator on SNL. However, her takes on other political figures also contributed to her win. McKinnon’s win is a win for all women in comedy.
8. Best Actress, Drama: Elisabeth Moss
Moss’s portrayal of Offred in Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” was stunning. Moss brought Margret Atwood’s original character to life, and much of the show’s success is due to Moss’s powerful acting.
7. Best Actor, Comedy: Donald Glover
Glover won this award for his role on the show “Atlanta.”
6. Best Limited Series: “Big Little Lies”
“Big Little Lies” is all about female empowerment, and what better way to show that than through their lead female cast members.
5. Television Movie: “Black Mirror: San Junipero”
“Black Mirror: San Junipero” is a big win for the LGBTQ+ community.
4. Best Drama: “The Handmaid’s Tale”
The political climate of “The Handmaid’s Tale” is eerily similar to things that are happening in our real-life world. This series calls us to action and encourages us to work hard to protect women’s rights and work against misogyny.
3. Best Actor, Limited TV Series or TV Movie: Riz Ahmed
Ahmed made history with this win as he is the first South Asian man to win an Emmy for his role on HBO’s drama The Night Of.
2. Directing for a Comedy Series: Donald Glover
Donald Glover is another award-winner to make history. Glover is the first black person to win an award for directing. He won the award for his directing of his show “Atlanta.”
1. Writing for a Comedy Series: Lena Waithe
Waithe is best known for her role as Denise on Aziz Ansari’s “Master of None.” Her win is a win for black women everywhere as she is the first black woman to win a writing Emmy. Additionally, Waithe’s win brings representation to the LGBTQ+ community.
