When you’re trying to decide what kind of food to feed your dog, there are many choices available to you. If you’re looking at wet food vs dry food for dogs, you need to understand the benefits and downsides to each of those options. Different people prefer different things, and one is not necessarily better than the other for your dog.

Many people instinctively choose dry food for their dog because it is the easiest feeding option available. You can buy big bags of dog food at your local grocery store or warehouse store and they will last for weeks or longer, depending on the size of your dog. When stored in an airtight container, the food will stay fresh and be safe from insects and rodents, even when stored in the garage or on a porch.

More Economical

Dry food is also the cheapest option in most cases. You can get dry food in a variety of flavor combinations and specialty formulations, and you can control the quality of the food by investigating the ingredient list of each brand. If you’re on a budget, dry food is probably the best choice for you, although you’ll want to get the best food you can afford for your dog.

Wet food has other advantages. For one thing, the added odor of wet food makes it more appealing to dogs, so if you have a dog that’s not eating properly, or that has trouble finding the food bowl due to decreased sense ability with age, wet food can solve that problem. You can use wet food as a way to stimulate the appetite of a sick dog in a short-term way.

Hydration

Another benefit of wet food is the higher liquid content of the food. Hydration is important for dogs, and if your dog isn’t drinking enough water, wet food can help bridge that gap. Wet food tends to have higher protein contents and less carbohydrates, making them healthier for dogs, although of course brands vary and you should check the nutritional content before you buy any dog food.

There are several downsides of wet food, however. For one thing, it’s less economical. Since wet food comes in much smaller containers, you pay more per serving than you would for a dry food. Another problem is that it’s not as convenient. You can put dry food out in the morning and leave it there for your dog to eat whenever he likes, but if you do that with wet food you might draw insects.

No matter what kind of dog you have, choosing the right dog food is important. Making the decision of wet food vs dry food for your dog is a personal choice that only you can make. By knowing the pros and cons of each choice you can make the best decision possible.
