There are some universal rules that everyone should know. They will help lift you up, find your authentic self, and live your best life on your terms. Check out these 23 golden rules of life before to find inspiration for yourself.

  1.  Set your own terms. This is your life. Don’t waste it playing by someone else’s playbook.
  2. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
  3. Marry a someone that you love to talk to.
  4. Don’t believe all you hear, spend all you have, or sleep all you want.
  5. Mean it when you say, “I love you” and love deeply and passionately.
  6. Be engaged at least six months before you get married. Relationships are easy to end, marriages are harder. You’ll have forever with this person if it’s meant to be, taking a few extra months to be sure will seems like a moment in the grand scheme of things.
  7. Never laugh at anyone’s dreams. People who don’t have dreams don’t have much.
  8.  Set your own terms. This is your life. Don’t waste it playing by someone else’s playbook.
  9. In disagreements, fight fairly and try to understand both perspectives, even if you don’t agree. Disagreeing with a person doesn’t mean you can’t get along or find common group. It just means you’re two different unique people who have experienced different lives.
  10. Don’t judge people by their relatives or previous reputations. Judge them only by their relationship and actions towards you.
  11. Forgive everyone who wants forgiveness. Not everyone deserves forgiveness, especially those who make no effort to change or ask for forgiveness. However, for those people who do genuinely change and seek forgiveness, forgive them. Life’s too short to live with resentment.
  12. Prioritize creating a healthy work/life balance. Family is forever, jobs come and go.
  13. Stop comparing yourself and your life to others. It’s hard when social media is constantly showing us the best sides of everyone lives, but your life is perfect for you. Your life is enviable to someone. Stop comparing yourselves to others and learn to love what you have.
  14. Talk slowly, but think quickly.
  15. When someone asks you a question you don’t want to answer, smile and ask, “Why do you want to know?” You don’t have to give information away that you don’t want to.
  16. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
  17. Never blame others for where you are in life. You are ultimately responsible for your life and what you’ll do with the trials and things that are handed to you.
  18. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
  19. Remember the three R’s: Respect for self; Respect for others; and Responsibility for all your actions.
  20. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, accept responsibility and take immediate steps to correct it.
  21. Never stop smiling. Even if you have to fake it, sometimes smiling is all it takes to make a crappy day a little bit better. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.
  22. Spend some time alone and reflect on what you can give to this world.
  23. Live your life in such a way that you have no doubt that you are a good person and acting in good ways. Even if you’re definition of “good” doesn’t line up with another person’s, I truly believe that everyone knows when they’re doing good or bad.
